Before You Call for Appliance Repair: 10 Simple Things to Check First

When an appliance stops working, it is easy to assume the worst. A refrigerator that is not cooling, a dryer that takes too long, a washer that will not spin, or a dishwasher that leaves water behind can feel like an emergency right away.


Sometimes the problem does need a professional repair. Other times, there are a few simple things homeowners can safely check first. These quick checks may save you time, help your technician diagnose the issue faster, or prevent an unnecessary service call.


Here are 10 things to check before calling for appliance repair.


1. Check the Breaker


Before digging too deep, check your electrical panel. Some appliances may look completely dead simply because a breaker has tripped.


This is especially common with dishwashers, dryers, ovens, ranges, and garbage disposals. If the breaker is tripped, reset it one time. If it trips again, do not keep resetting it. A breaker that repeatedly trips can point to an electrical problem, a shorted component, or a safety issue that should be checked by a professional.



2. Make Sure the Appliance Is Plugged In


This sounds obvious, but it happens more often than people think. Appliances can get bumped, shifted, or pulled just enough for the plug to loosen.


Check behind the appliance if you can do so safely. For washers, dryers, refrigerators, and ranges, make sure the cord is firmly plugged into the outlet. For built-in appliances like dishwashers or wall ovens, this may not be easily accessible, so do not force anything apart just to check the connection.



3. Look for a Tripped GFCI Outlet


Some appliances are connected to outlets protected by a GFCI. These outlets usually have “test” and “reset” buttons. If a GFCI trips, the appliance may stop working even though the breaker looks fine.


This can affect garage refrigerators, laundry appliances, kitchen appliances, and outlets near water. Press the reset button on the GFCI outlet if you find one. If it will not reset or keeps tripping, there may be a real electrical or appliance issue.



4. Confirm the Water Supply Is Turned On


If your washer, dishwasher, refrigerator water dispenser, or ice maker is not filling, check the water supply first.


For washers, make sure both hot and cold valves are open. For dishwashers, check the valve under the sink. For refrigerators, look for the water shutoff behind the unit, under the sink, in the basement, or near the wall.


Sometimes a valve gets bumped, partially closed, or turned off during another repair. A partially closed valve can cause slow filling, low water pressure, or ice maker problems.



5. Check for Kinked or Crushed Hoses


Water supply and drain hoses can get pinched behind appliances. This is especially common after moving a washer, dishwasher, or refrigerator.


A kinked washer hose can prevent proper filling. A kinked drain hose can cause draining issues. A crushed refrigerator water line can stop the dispenser or ice maker from working correctly.


If you can safely inspect the hose without pulling too hard or damaging the flooring, take a look. If the appliance is heavy, built in, or difficult to move, it is better to leave it alone and let a technician check it.



6. Clean the Filter or Screen


Many appliances have filters, screens, or vents that need regular cleaning.


Dishwashers often have filters that collect food particles and debris. Washers may have inlet screens that can clog with sediment. Dryers need clean lint screens and proper airflow. Refrigerators may have water filters that need replacement.


A clogged filter does not always mean the appliance is broken. Sometimes the appliance is doing its job, but airflow, water flow, or drainage is being restricted.



7. Check the Dryer Vent Airflow


If your dryer is heating but clothes are still damp after a full cycle, the dryer may not be the main problem. Restricted airflow is one of the most common causes of long dry times.


Start by cleaning the lint screen. Then check the outside vent hood while the dryer is running. You should feel strong airflow. If the airflow is weak, blocked, or barely noticeable, the vent may be clogged or crushed.


Poor airflow can cause long dry times, overheating, and extra wear on the dryer. It can also become a fire hazard if lint builds up inside the vent system.



8. Pay Attention to Error Codes


If your appliance shows an error code, take a picture of it before unplugging the appliance or resetting anything. Error codes can be very helpful for diagnosis, but they may disappear after the unit is reset.


Write down what was happening when the code appeared. For example:

Was the washer trying to drain?

Was the oven preheating?

Was the refrigerator beeping?

Did the dishwasher stop mid-cycle?

Did the dryer shut off early?


The more detail you can provide, the easier it is for a technician to narrow down the problem.



9. Listen for Unusual Sounds


Sounds can tell you a lot about an appliance problem. A humming refrigerator, grinding dishwasher, squealing dryer, banging washer, or clicking range may all point in different directions.


Try to notice when the sound happens. Does it occur at startup, during spin, while draining, when the compressor starts, or only under a heavy load?


You do not need to diagnose the sound yourself, but describing it clearly can help your appliance repair technician get to the root of the problem faster.



10. Find the Model and Serial Number


Before scheduling appliance repair, try to locate the model and serial number. This helps the repair company look up parts, service information, common issues, and warranty details.


Common model number locations include:


Refrigerators: inside the fresh food section, usually on a side wall or ceiling area

Dishwashers: around the door frame or tub opening

Washers and dryers: around the door opening, lid area, or rear panel

Ranges and ovens: around the drawer, door frame, or control area

Microwaves: inside the door opening or on the frame


A clear photo of the model tag is usually best. Be careful not to confuse the model number with the serial number, part number, or marketing name.



When to Stop Troubleshooting


Basic checks are helpful, but there is a point where it is better to stop and call a professional.


Do not continue troubleshooting if you smell burning, see sparks, notice melted wiring, smell gas, see water near electrical components, or have a breaker that keeps tripping. You should also avoid taking panels apart unless you know what you are doing.


Modern appliances use control boards, sensors, motors, valves, switches, and safety devices that all work together. Guessing at parts can get expensive quickly, especially if the real issue is something different.
