Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working? Here’s What to Check First

If your refrigerator’s ice maker suddenly stops producing ice—or only makes a few cubes a day—you’re not alone. Ice maker problems are among the most common service calls we get at Expo Appliance Service. The good news is that many issues can be identified before calling a technician. Here’s a simple guide to troubleshooting your ice maker and knowing when it’s time for professional repair.



Check the Temperature

Your freezer should stay between 0°F and 5°F for the ice maker to work properly. Water freezes at 32 degrees but most ice makers will not cycle above 15 degrees. If the temperature is too warm, ice production slows or stops altogether.


Quick Fix:

  • Make sure the door is fully closing and the gasket (rubber seal) isn’t torn.

  • Avoid overfilling your freezer—it needs good airflow.


Inspect the Water Filter


A clogged or old water filter is one of the most common reasons for a weak or non-functioning ice maker. Filters typically need replacing every 6 months, or more often if you have hard water. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser, check for good water flow there. A slow trickle of water there means your ice maker isn't getting much water either.


Tip: Look for the model number on your filter and replace it with the same type. After installing, run water through the dispenser for a few minutes to clear air from the line.


Make Sure the Water Supply Is On


Sometimes the issue isn’t the ice maker itself—it’s the water supply line. If the line behind your fridge is kinked, frozen, or shut off, no water can reach the ice maker.


Quick Fix:

  • Pull the refrigerator away from the wall or look under the sink to find the supply valve.

  • Check the water valve and ensure the line isn’t pinched or kinked.


Test the Ice Maker Arm or Switch

If your ice bin is full, most models automatically pause ice production using an arm or sensor. Sometimes this can stick in the “off” position.


Quick Fix:

  • Move the arm up and down a few times to ensure it’s not stuck.

  • If your model has an on/off switch, make sure it’s set to “on.”


Look for Frozen Fill Tubes

When the small tube that delivers water into the ice maker freezes, water flow stops completely.


How to Check:

  • Unplug the fridge.

  • Locate the fill tube behind the ice maker (usually a small plastic hose).

  • If it’s frozen solid, thaw it carefully with a steamer, hot water, or a hair dryer on low heat very carefully—just enough to melt the blockage.


If this keeps happening, there may be an underlying valve or temperature issue that needs service.


Check for Faulty Parts


If you’ve gone through all the basic checks and the ice maker still won’t run, the problem might involve one of the following components:


  • Inlet valve: Controls water flow into the ice maker.

  • Ice maker module: Powers the ice-making cycle.

  • Thermostat or sensor: Detects when to freeze and release cubes.


These parts usually require professional testing and replacement.
