When a built-in appliance stops working, replacing it may seem like the simplest solution. You find a new wall oven, cooktop, microwave, or refrigerator that is approximately the same size, arrange delivery, and assume the new appliance will fit where the old one was.
Unfortunately, built-in appliance replacement is rarely that simple.
Unlike a standard freestanding refrigerator or range, a built-in appliance must fit into an existing cabinet, countertop, ventilation system, and utility setup. Even when two appliances are advertised as the same size, their actual installation requirements may be very different.
Before deciding whether to repair or replace a built-in appliance, it is important to consider the costs beyond the price shown on the appliance.
The Advertised Size Is Not the Cutout Size
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is shopping according to the advertised width of the appliance.
For example, a wall oven may be described as a 30-inch model, but that does not mean it requires an opening exactly 30 inches wide. The actual cabinet cutout may be narrower, and the required height and depth can vary from one model to another.

Making the opening larger may require cutting the countertop. The difficulty and cost depend heavily on the countertop material.
Laminate and some wood countertops are generally easier to modify. Granite, quartz, solid-surface and other stone-like materials may require specialized cutting tools and an experienced countertop contractor.
There is also a limit to how much an opening can safely be enlarged. The countertop must retain enough material around the opening to support the appliance without cracking or weakening.
Making an opening smaller can be even more difficult. It may require custom trim, support brackets or replacement of part or all of the countertop.
For these reasons, the exact cutout dimensions should be verified before purchasing a replacement cooktop.
Electrical Requirements May Be Different
Two appliances that serve the same purpose may not have the same electrical requirements.
A new appliance could require:
A different voltage
A higher-amperage circuit
A dedicated circuit
Different wiring
A relocated junction box
A different receptacle
Additional grounding or bonding
More clearance around the electrical connection
This is particularly important when replacing an older wall oven, electric cooktop, induction cooktop or built-in microwave.
An older appliance may have operated on a circuit that does not meet the requirements of the replacement model. In that situation, an electrician may need to install or upgrade the circuit before the appliance can be used.
Induction cooktops can create additional complications because some models require more electrical capacity than the appliance they are replacing.
Never assume that a new appliance can be connected simply because the old one used electricity in the same location.
Gas Connections May Need to Be Changed
Replacing a gas cooktop or built-in gas appliance may require more than reconnecting the existing gas line.
The installer may discover that the appliance needs:
A different regulator
A new gas connector
A relocated shutoff valve
Changes to the gas-line routing
Conversion between natural gas and propane
Additional clearance below the appliance

The location of the gas connection can be especially important when a cooktop is installed above drawers or a wall oven. A gas regulator or shutoff valve positioned in the wrong place may interfere with the new appliance.

Ventilation Systems May Not Be Compatible
Ventilation is another cost that is easy to overlook.
Cooktops, ranges, built-in microwaves and downdraft systems may depend on existing ductwork. A replacement appliance may have a vent outlet in a different position or require a different duct size.

A built-in microwave often appears to be a standard countertop microwave surrounded by decorative trim. However, the trim kit is normally designed for a particular microwave model or product family.
The existing trim kit may not fit a replacement microwave, even if the new microwave has similar exterior dimensions.

A different mounting base
Changes to ventilation
Relocation of the electrical outlet

Gas, water or electrical connections are located behind the unit
