The Next Right to Repair Battle Has Already Started

Walk into almost any home today and you'll find appliances that are smarter than ever before.
Refrigerators connect to Wi-Fi. Washers automatically dispense detergent. Ovens can be controlled from your phone. Dishwashers monitor water quality and adjust their cycles on the fly.
From a consumer's perspective, these innovations are exciting. But from the perspective of the people who repair these products, they've fundamentally changed how appliance repair works.
And that's something every appliance owner should understand.
Appliance Repair Used to Be Simpler
When I first started in this industry, diagnosing an appliance was a straightforward process.
A technician needed three things:
A wiring diagram
A quality multimeter
Knowledge and experience
If a refrigerator wasn't cooling, you could trace the circuit, measure voltages, check switches, thermostats, relays, heaters, motors, and determine exactly which component had failed.
There were certainly difficult repairs, but the information needed to diagnose them was generally available. Manufacturers published wiring diagrams, technical sheets, and service information that allowed trained technicians to understand how the product worked.
Good diagnosis wasn't about replacing parts until something worked. It was about understanding the machine.
Today's Appliances Are Computers
Modern appliances are incredible pieces of engineering.
Instead of mechanical timers and simple switches, they rely on electronic control boards, sensors, software, low-voltage communication circuits, and microprocessors that constantly monitor how the appliance operates.
Many components no longer communicate with simple on/off signals, some use small DC voltages. Others communicate using digital signals or frequency-based communication that can't be diagnosed with a basic multimeter alone.
Software has become just as important as hardware.
That isn't necessarily a bad thing. These advances have made appliances more energy efficient, quieter, and capable of features that would have seemed impossible twenty years ago. But they've also created a new challenge.

The Missing Piece
The electronics themselves aren't the problem. The problem is that independent technicians often aren't given enough information about how those electronics work.
Manufacturers understandably protect proprietary software and engineering designs. However, that sometimes leaves technicians without access to detailed diagnostic procedures, communication specifications, programming information, or advanced service functions needed to efficiently identify certain failures.
In some cases, even the manufacturer's published service procedures recommend replacing one electronic component and, if that doesn't solve the problem, replacing a control board next.
That's not because technicians don't know how to diagnose appliances, it's because the information needed to perform a deeper diagnosis often isn't available.
The result can be additional labor, unnecessary parts replacement, increased costs, and longer repair times for customers.
Software Is Becoming a Diagnostic Tool
One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the introduction of manufacturer diagnostic software.
These tools allow technicians to connect directly to an appliance and retrieve information that simply isn't available through traditional testing.
Depending on the product, they may display:
Stored fault codes
Operating history
Sensor readings
Component status
Software versions
Guided diagnostic tests
Individual component activation
In many cases, these tools dramatically reduce diagnosis time and improve repair accuracy. That's a positive development. The question isn't whether these tools should exist, the question is who should have access to them.
A Good Example
One manufacturer that deserves recognition is GE Appliances.
Their SmartHQ Service platform allows technicians to communicate directly with many connected GE-family appliances. It can retrieve stored diagnostic information, access service functions, test components, and provide valuable information that helps technicians accurately diagnose problems.
What I appreciate most is that independent repair companies aren't automatically excluded.
The hardware and subscription are available for purchase rather than being limited exclusively to a manufacturer's preferred service network.
No system is perfect. SmartHQ doesn't diagnose every failure, and technicians still need experience and traditional troubleshooting skills. But it's a step toward giving qualified repair professionals better tools instead of less information.
Not Every Manufacturer Takes the Same Approach
Other manufacturers have developed similar electronic diagnostic tools, but access isn't always the same.
Some diagnostic software is available only to companies participating in specific manufacturer service programs.
That creates an important question for our industry: If software becomes essential to diagnosing future appliances, should access be limited only to certain repair companies?
Or should any qualified technician be able to purchase the same diagnostic tools after a customer owns the product?
I believe that's one of the biggest questions facing appliance repair over the next decade.
Why This Matters to Homeowners
Most homeowners don't think about diagnostic software. They simply want their refrigerator repaired correctly. They want their washing machine fixed quickly. They want to choose a repair company they trust.
When diagnostic information is widely available, independent repair companies can compete on skill, service, communication, convenience, and price. When access becomes restricted, consumers may have fewer choices. Competition benefits everyone. It encourages better customer service. It encourages faster repairs. It encourages innovation.
Most importantly, it gives consumers the freedom to choose the repair company they want to invite into their home.
This Is the Next Right to Repair Conversation
Many people have heard of the Right to Repair movement.
It often focuses on smartphones, tractors, medical equipment, and consumer electronics.
But household appliances are becoming part of that conversation too.
After an appliance is out of warranty, I believe consumers should be able to choose any qualified repair company they want.
Independent repair businesses should have the ability to purchase the same diagnostic tools necessary to properly service products their customers legally own.
This isn't about giving away proprietary engineering secrets. It's about providing reasonable access to the tools required to diagnose increasingly software-driven products.
Repairability Matters When We Recommend Appliances
When customers ask us which appliance brands we recommend, there are a lot of factors to consider: reliability, parts availability, cost, serviceability, and how well the manufacturer supports the people who will eventually have to repair the product.
Access to diagnostic information is part of that equation.
GE Appliances is currently one of the manufacturers we recommend most often, and its approach to serviceability is one reason why. By making its SmartHQ diagnostic platform available to independent service companies, GE gives technicians access to tools that can help us diagnose its products more accurately and efficiently.
That doesn't mean GE appliances never break, or that they're always the right choice for every customer. But when we're comparing manufacturers, we believe a company that gives independent technicians the information and tools needed to properly repair its products deserves credit for doing so.
Ultimately, that's the kind of approach we'd like to see more manufacturers adopt.
Looking Ahead
Appliances will continue becoming more sophisticated. Artificial intelligence, predictive diagnostics, cloud connectivity, and remote monitoring will almost certainly become more common over the next decade.
Those technologies have tremendous potential to improve reliability and service.
But they also make one thing increasingly important: Who controls access to the software that keeps those products running?
As someone who has spent nearly two decades in appliance repair, I hope the industry chooses a path that encourages competition, supports independent repair businesses, and most importantly, protects consumers' freedom to choose who repairs the products they own.
Technology should make appliances easier to repair, not harder.
And as our industry evolves, I believe that's a conversation worth having.
